Rogue Beard Beer – What Is Wrong With Me?!

I would like to start this post by asking myself an introspective question… What the F$#% is wrong with me?! Why am I drawn to the unusual, abnormal and bizarre? I mean Beard Beer? Are you freaking kidding me?! But, once again like a moth to a flame I HAD to try this.

Rogue Brewery, the geniuses behind Dead Guy Ale and the infamous Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale, have once again enticed my inner super freak with their newest wild concoction… Beer brewed with yeast cultivated from Brewmaster John “More Hops” Maier’s beard. I know… I know, but follow me and I promise you will get past your gag reflex… Maybe.

Apparently the idea started as a joke and surely involved the Rogue team passing around more than just beer.  But, miraculously a viable strain of yeast was found in John’s beard and Beard Beer was born.

Ok, enough with the back story, so how does it taste? Surprisingly delicious! Shockingly so, actually. In fact, if Ron Swanson & Mr. T had a love child and he grew up to be a Brewmaster, I am certain that THIS is the beer he would invent.

The beer pours a hazy golden amber with a nice head (hehe). It’s well balanced with hints of sweet caramel and citrus with an almost velvety texture. Very similar to a Hefeweizen or more accurately Dunkelweizen.

So, get past your immediate disgust, disregard everything you have learned about food sanitation and actually give it a fair shot. I promise, you will not be disappointing. But, do it fast because they only brewed one batch of this marvel of American beergenuity, and once they run out its gone forever.

This is such a great idea. I don’t see how this concept is any worse than waiting for yeast to fall of the rafters or blow in from through the window. Do you know if they exported any to Europe?

    • I totally agree! Once I got past the idea of the yeast coming from another mans beard, it was no big deal. Its just another strain of wild yeast and it was delicious.

I’m not sure if they distribute their products in Europe yet, but their website says that they ship anywhere in the world. Although I’m sure the shipping cost will be pretty hefty.

I once ordered a bottle of Brewdogs Sink The Bismarck from Scotland and it was fantastic! Not cheap, but totally worth it :)
